![]() ![]() As the collection progresses, the stories get weirder, the narrators more hermetic, the landscapes more allegorical, until we reach the final story, a 40-page episode narrated entirely from inside the head of a man walking down a corridor in pursuit of a female colleague with whom he is obsessed. ![]() The stories that make up the first part of Leaving the Sea take place in a recognisable American landscape with identifiable characters who move through space and time in a more or less conventional mode. He is associate professor in the School of Arts at Columbia University, where he teaches creative writing. He is the editor of The Anchor Book of New American Short Stories (2004) and the forthcoming Vintage Book of Contemporary American Short Stories.
